LockDown Browser® & Respondus Monitor® Student Quick Start Guide Canvas Edition WHAT IS RESPONDUS LOCKDOWN BROWSER? USING WITH A WEBCAM (RESPONDUS MONITOR) LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking quizzes in Canvas. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. Respondus provides tools that facilitate online exam creation and the assessment proctoring management solutions Lockdown Browser and Monitor. Faculty can download and install Respondus 4.0, a Windows-based tool for creating and managing exams that can be published directly to Canvas or published. This video shows how to create a Quiz in Canvas and require LockDown Browser. It also shows what it looks like from the student perspective when they run Lo. LockDown Browser is a client application that is installed to a local computer. Both the Windows edition and the Mac edition of the browser are based on Chromium, Google's open source framework. Students do NOT need Google's Chrome browser installed; nor will this version affect a Chrome browser that's already installed. Respondus LockDown Browser, or simply LockDown Browser, is a custom web browser that enables you to discourage cheating while students are taking their online exams. Developed by Respondus, this strict program does exactly what its name implies and locks down your browser usage.

The version of Lockdown Browser available in Rutgers Canvas and Sakai is different than the version from Rutgers Blackboard. If you need to use Lockdown Browser to take an exam or quiz in both Rutgers Blackboard and Canvas/Sakai, then you will need to install two versions of the application on your computer. The directions below assume you have the Blackboard version already installed on your computer

PC

  1. Follow the directions to download and install Lockdown Browser.
  2. Select the option for a second institution.
  3. Click Next.
  4. In your Windows menu, you will now see two versions of Lockdown Browser.

Macintosh

  1. Navigate to your Applications folder.
  2. Locate your existing copy of Lockdown Browser.
  3. Right-click to show the mouse menu.
  4. Click Rename.
  5. Rename the application to include version (Blackboard).
  6. Follow the directions to download and install Lockdown Browser. You may opt to rename the second version for Canvas.

Before committing to remote proctored exams, below are some considerations:

Proctored Exams

Traditional timed, proctored exams are possible remotely using the tools available in Canvas and Respondus LockDown Browser & Respondus Monitor. However,proctored remote exams have several drawbacks:

  1. They are often even more stressful for students than in-person proctored exams, which can negatively impact student performance.
  2. They require substantial planning and setup on the part of the instructor and the student, and may generate many “false positive” flags that must be reviewed by an instructor after the exam.
  3. Not all students have access to the appropriate technology to use services like Respondus Monitor that requires a webcam; instructors will have to make accommodations for such students.
  4. The technical infrastructure of services like Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor has not been utilized at this scale before, so planning must include what to do if the proctoring service crashes during the exam.
  5. Students may have privacy concerns about third-party recorded remote proctoring. Unlike when students agree to the use of such systems when they register for online courses, students did not agree to remote instruction when they registered for spring 2020 and instructors will need to make accommodations for these students.
  6. LockDown Browser features do not address all access needs for students with approved accommodations. If faculty intend to use Respondus LockDown Browser (with or without Monitor), they should consult Disability Resource Center for those students who have identified themselves to faculty for accommodations. That way, students can avert any accusations of cheating that may be due to use of approved assistive technology or accessibility issues.

For these reasons, during this time we recommend using alternatives to timed, proctored exams wherever possible. Large courses reliant on in-person exams should consider open-book exams or frequent low-stakes assessments as alternative assessment strategies that are relatively easy to grade.
